It is a worrying fact that cardiac arrest kills more people than fires in the UK every year, Even more alarming is that 270 children will die at school every year from cardiac arrest

What can we do to help?

It is not mandatory for schools or workplaces to have a life-saving defibrillator as part of their first aid requirements. However we strive to help and encourage more and more public arenas to become heart safe locations with the addition of a defibrillator.

The reality is that 12 people under 35 die each week in the UK from cardiac arrest. Of these, 270 children will die at school each year.

With such a huge number of children suffering Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) each year in the UK, we strongly believe that defibrillators and CPR training should be made a legal requirement for all schools. We also think both teachers and pupils alike should be taught basic CPR skills to help make schools a secure environment.

Why should all schools have a defibrillator?

The only definitive treatment for a victim of cardiac arrest is effective CPR and early defibrillation, which must be administered within 3-5 minutes following collapse, this boosts survival chances from 6% to 74%.

Equipping your school with a defibrillator not only protects the hearts of your students and staff, but the volunteers, parents and members of the local community that visit your school on a daily basis.

Why are children vulnerable?

Young children are at risk to cardiac arrest as their hearts are still growing and developing strength. They are also susceptible to commo cardis which is a condition following a sharp blow to the heart through heavy impacts, collisions and sports injuries.

This can lead to an SCA, which primarily is caused by an electrical malfunction in the heart which disturbs the regular heartbeat.
